Perfumery and cosmetics exports to reach almost ¤6 billion by 2022

According to Stanpa's latest report, the Spanish cosmetics and perfumery sector returns to pre-covid levels and exceeds them for the second consecutive year

Stanpa, the National Association of Perfumery and Cosmetic founded in 1952, has presented a new edition of his annual report analysing the current situation of the sector. 'X-ray of the sector of the cosmetic and the perfumery in Spain', in collaboration with the agency Kreab, offers notable data on what supposed the exercise of 2022 for the sector of the cosmetic and the perfumery in Spain. In this occasion has served to corroborate that the sector has grown and that goes back to situate in levels prepandemia, and even surpassing the figures of 2019.

One of the conclusions drawn from the report is that the sector closed 2022 with a positive evolution of 11.3% compared to 2021. Colour cosmetics (+29.4%) and perfume (+19.8%) have led the evolution of a sector that is growing in all categories compared to 2019. Skin care is the third fastest growing category compared to 2021, with 9%. This +11.3% leaves behind the figure for 2019, which until now marked the peak of the historical series with 8,460 million euros.

Spain exports more perfumery and cosmetics products than significant sectors such as wine, footwear and olive oil

Companies in the sector have increased the volume of imports and exports of cosmetic products, reaching 6,500 million euros in exports, and this means that Spain remains among the top 10 world exporters of perfumery and cosmetic products, repeats as the second largest exporter of perfumes worldwide and consolidates its position as the fourth largest market in the European Union.

Exports of perfumes, cosmetics, personal care and essential oils reached a volume of 6,515 million euros in 2022, up 21% on 2022

51% of the sector's exports go to the European Union, while 49% are destined for the rest of the world. The main non-EU markets are the USA, United Kingdom, Mexico, China, United Arab Emirates, Chile, Hong Kong, Russia, Brazil and Turkey. In terms of the most exported categories, perfumery represents 40% of the sector's total exports and is the one that recorded the highest growth (+27%). The increase in the rest of the categories was around 20%: colour cosmetics (+22%), toiletries and personal hygiene (+21%), skin care (+20%) and hair care (+14%). Exports have increased in all regions, with special mention to Latin America, where the increase has exceeded 50%, but also to other areas such as North America (+34%) and Oceania (+32%).

Employment

The economic importance of the sector of the perfumery and the cosmetic to level industry no only reflects in the volume of consumption or exports; also by the places of work that represents. In Spain offers employment to near of 300.000 employments: 40.000 direct and 250.000 indirect.
