The future Sustainable Consumption Law will put a stop to greenwashing. Spain is following in the footsteps of the European Union and is finalising the details of this forthcoming law.

As reported by the newspaper 'El País', the Ministry of Social Rights is working on this law with the aim of continuing the same line imposed from Brussels.

The Ministry wants to apply this regulation to put an end to and identify this "unfair commercial practice" and to force companies to ensure that claims such as "sustainable", "green" or "respectful of the environment and the planet" are truthful and demonstrable.

El País has explained that some of the measures proposed by the executive in the new regulation include financial penalties. Companies and firms that use the above terms without scientific backing could face fines of up to €100,000 or six times the profit the company has made in its financial year.

Less than a month ago, the European Union revealed some of the measures included in its rules to prevent 'greenwashing' in companies, regardless of their economic activity. In case of non-compliance with the requirements proposed by the European Commission for the inclusion of these 'green' claims, companies could be excluded from public contracts, lose their income and even face a financial penalty of 4% of their annual turnover.
