Shiseido drives the development of innovative cosmetics with AI

Japanese brand seeks to revolutionise industry by combining 100 years of experience with artificial intelligence technology

Shiseido, in partnership with Accenture, has taken an important step into the future of cosmetics by integrating an innovative artificial intelligence (AI)-based formulation development function into its VOYAGER digital platform. Operational from February 2024, the tool uses proprietary algorithms and a vast database of more than half a million data points, the result of more than a century of research by the company.

Under its R&D philosophy, DYNAMIC HARMONY, Shiseido has fused the artisanal skills (TAKUMI) of its researchers with advanced AI, enabling a human-machine co-creation approach. This technology facilitates the formulation of cosmetic products more efficiently by analysing data on ingredients, combinations and stability over time.

This development not only accelerates the creation of new products that respond to changing consumer needs, but also frees researchers to focus on creative tasks. Shiseido, with its sights set on its 2030 vision of becoming a personalised beauty and wellness company, plans to expand VOYAGER to other global research centres, continuing its legacy of innovation in the world of beauty.
