Vytrus continues to reap success with its latest active ingredient Photobiome™. The company, which specialises in active ingredients derived from plant stem cells, has received the Silver Best Ingredient Award 2023 at in-cosmetics Latin America for its latest active ingredient PHOTOBIOME™, the microbiota photoprotector.

The active has gained further recognition for its innovation through the Best Ingredient Awards at in-cosmetics Latin America 2023, the leading trade fair for personal care ingredients in Latin America. The awards ceremony was held on Wednesday 27 July at the fair in São Paulo, Brazil, where Vytrus Biotech's commercial team received the award.

Following this award ceremony, Photobiome™ has already received its fourth award: in-cosmetics Korea Best Ingredient Award 2023, the BSB Innovation Awards, I Feel Good Awards Best Formulation 2023 and made it to the top 10 finalists worldwide at the in-cosmetics Global Innovation Awards last March. With this recognition, Photobiome™ once again reinforces its efficacy, innovation and scientific level among the latest innovations launched on the market worldwide.

The new active ingredient Photobiome™ opens the door to a new category of Microbial Antioxidants by helping our skin's microbiota to photoprotect itself, protecting and nourishing the bacteria, modulating the release of its own natural photo-defence molecules that improve the signs of the photo-ageing process in the skin.

The new Sun-Microbiota-Skin axis

Vytrus has been researching skin microbiota for 10 years and has discovered metabolic pathways for applications such as acne, biological deodorant, interaction with brain and pleasure hormones, as well as skin ageing linked to the ageing bacterial populations that inhabit our outermost skin layer.

Now Vytrus unveils with Photobiome™ its latest scientific breakthroughs in the field of microbiota and describes a new biological approach: the Sun-Microbiota-Skin axis, elucidating the important role of microbiota in relation to the effects of solar radiation on the skin, either for or against skin tissue. The active ingredient combats skin photoageing due to excessive sun exposure by photoprotecting the skin microbiota.

The story of an innovation inspired by nature

Photobiome is a 100% natural active ingredient from pomegranate (Punica granatum) and cotton stem cells from desert and semi-arid regions of the Near and Middle East (Gossypium herbaceum). Using a new biotechnological platform of cell fusions, Vytrus combines two plants with high antioxidant power and resistance to extreme temperatures. In this way, Vytrus achieves a synergistic effect in preventing sun-induced skin ageing through photoprotection of the skin microbiota.

Biotech pushes boundaries in sun care and healthy ageing

Photobiome represents a new paradigm in the sun care and ageing markets and a scientific breakthrough and breakthrough in the field of microbiota. This new category of biotechnology-based active ingredients offers cosmetic formulations new ways to protect and repair skin photodamage with a sustainable solution based on plant biotechnology:

  • Antioxidant preventive and treatment formulations
  • Photo-ageing treatment: wrinkle products (crow's feet, nasolabial folds, eye contour)
  • Preventive and restorative sun care formulations
  • Treatments to improve the appearance of hyperpigmentation
