Shiseido has made a discovery in the field of cosmetics and skincare. For the first time in the world, the brand has identified that OBP2A (Odorant Binding Protein 2A), known for its presence in the nasal cavity, is also found in the human epidermis. This protein plays a crucial role in maintaining homeostasis and the epidermal barrier, thus protecting the skin against external and internal stress factors.

The function of OBP2To in the skin

Shiseido's study has shown that OBP2A, in addition to its function in the nose to filter cell-damaging stress molecules, is expressed in the epidermis. Here, it acts as a filter for stress molecules that can damage the skin, helping to maintain its normal differentiation and barrier function. This discovery opens new doors to develop solutions that promote healthy and beautiful skin, able to withstand any environment.

The flower of white lily French: a key ingredient

A prominent finding of this research is the extract of the French white lily flower, also known as Madonna Lily. This extract has been shown to be effective in increasing the expression of OBP2A in the epidermis, resulting in increased epidermal layer thickness, reduced water loss and improved barrier function. These benefits are essential for maintaining skin hydration and protection, ensuring its long-term health and beauty.

Summary of research

During the study, skin immunostaining revealed the presence of OBP2A in the --epidermis. The addition of external stress molecules (such as nonenal) and internal stress molecules (such as oleic acid and palmitoleic acid, components of sebum and sweat) to epidermal cells with low levels of OBP2A decreased their defence capacity and reduced cell survival rate. Furthermore, in epidermal models with reduced OBP2A levels, a decrease in epidermal layer thickness and a reduction in the secretion of lamellar granules, key components of skin moisture, were observed. This resulted in impaired barrier function and increased epidermal water loss.

The search for ingredients that can increase OBP2A levels led to the discovery of French white lily extract, which not only increases OBP2A expression, but also improves epidermal thickness and reduces water loss, strengthening the skin's barrier function.

Shiseido continues its research into the skin's ability to recognise and respond to stimuli that affect all five senses. By understanding and strengthening the skin's inherent functions, the brand aims to develop products that promote healthy, beautiful skin that can withstand any environment. The results of this study were presented at the Gordon Research Conference in August 2023, a renowned scientific event.
