The Centre for Research and Technological Innovation (AITEX) has presented in May its new sustainable certification that testifies and guarantees the biodegradability of the content of cosmetic products and both the biodegradability and compostability of the cosmetic packaging. This certification is designed to help consumers and companies make more sustainable product choices.
Europe is working towards the promotion and regulation of more sustainable products in the cosmetic field. Commission Decision (EU) 2021/1870 of 22 October 2021 sets out the criteria for the award of the EU Ecolabel for cosmetic and animal care products. This decision encourages the promotion of products that have limited impact in terms of ecotoxicity and biodegradability, contain only a limited amount of hazardous substances, use less packaging and can be easily recycled.
In a world where sustainability is becoming an increasingly visible concern, it is essential that companies take steps to reduce their environmental impact. Biodegradability and compostability are two key concepts in this regard, allowing products to break down naturally and not harm the environment.
In what consists the new certificate of AITEX?
This certificate guarantees that the products have been assessed according to international standards and that they meet the necessary requirements to be considered biodegradable and compostable. Companies will improve the life cycle of the cosmetic, help reduce the carbon footprint and eliminate final waste. In addition, they are more demanded products in the market due to increased awareness of sustainability.
The certification is based on rigorous tests that assess the biodegradability and compostability of products, both of the cosmetic compositions themselves, using OECD 301 test methods, and of the packaging that contains them. These tests are carried out under controlled conditions that simulate the natural environment in which the products would be discarded. Products that pass these tests receive the AITEX certificate of biodegradability and compostability.
It is a valuable tool for consumers and companies seeking to make more sustainable choices. It allows companies to demonstrate their commitment to the environment and helps consumers identify products that are more environmentally friendly.
The new biodegradability and compostability certificate for cosmetics has been created by AITEX, a leading technology centre for research, development and innovation in the textile sector. This initiative is in line with the Centre's commitment to promote sustainability in the cosmetics industry. "The launch of this new certificate is a further step towards our goal of promoting more sustainable practices in the industry, which is essential to ensure a sustainable future" explains Vicente Blanes, CEO of AITEX.
