I will begin exposing you a situation. Imagine )'m ooking a video tutorial in which a fireman teach me to turn off a fire.

Do you think that’s enough preparation for the first fire to come and put it out? Obviously, it would buy me a suit. But, it would be the suitable? It would carry all the protections?I suppose that your answer is that no. Truth?

As for me, the situation that poses in the homemade cosmetics is very similar to this example, and if you accompany me by my epiphany explain you my arguments.

You come you? We go there!

Hello, I am Montserrat Pedro and I am Community manager of companies of the cosmetic sector, and since I changed the laboratory of R&D by the digital surroundings, I am much more conscious that in internet can find of everything!

  • I don’t know how to change the wheels to my daughter’s skates? YouTube
  • That I want to formulate my own home-made cosmetic? Instagram And YouTube.

And it's OK!

Yes, I insist, you can find of everything! And in the present case, the home-made cosmetic, ensure you that it does not remain backwards.

Complete courses to create your own line of cosmetic, recipes, videos step by step, books, etc. Free or not, but with information of all type and near at hand of the one who want. The problem? Clearly, the fault of scientific-technical rigour. Why? Because, in my opinion, they are reducing cosmetics to mixing ingredients to achieve a concrete functionality.

And, it is that with the excuse that "I don't sell products and, therefore, do n't have to fulfil with the regulation", they are forgetting of a basic and very important premise, the safety.

It will be by professional defect, but by my knowledges of the sector, can't avoid do me the following questions:

  • How do you know the product is preserved? Without a preservative or challenge test, it’s all speculation.

  • Have they made a stability? Or a compatibility with the container? Go! Nothing happens, as it is homemade...

  • How safe can this cosmetic be? Have safety margins (MoS) been calculated? Well, product dossier (PIF), let’s not even talk, right?

  • Are there any microbiological checks? I am almost sure that whoever makes that cosmetic, good manufacturing practices (GMP or BPF) will sound like Chinese, and that they will not know how to handle the ingredients either. So, I don’t know about you, but I’m starting to get all itchy!

  • Does the drafter have any knowledge of the regulation? Is he aware that there are limited and prohibited substances? Or even that there are those that cannot be mixed in the same product? Well, since you don’t have to comply, maybe you think that’s not important either...

  • Do they know what is an evaluation of the risk of a raw material? Or how much essential oil or perfume can add? Do they know the International Association of Perfumery (IFRA)?

In definite, have really technical knowledges? The one who retorts it, doubt it a lot. And the one who spreads it, or has a stomach of steel to happen all this by high, or really is not so expert as it prays in his biography.

Anyway, it could add more, but am safe that you understand perfectly the nightmare that supposes for me the home-made cosmetic. And wait, that this does not finish here. The inexactitud is the queen of this fashion, and no only by the commented previously, but because you can find perlitas like these:

  • Formulas to base of spoonfuls and drops. Pst! It is the new unit of international measure, exact to the utmost!

  • "It adds 3 drops of acid lactic, and smart!" And if no, with it throws it reactive fix you. If it is that check the pH is overrated.

  • "Put 4 drops of perfume or essential oil." Seriously? If IFRA was a person would put the hands in command, as I.

  • "The caducity of the cosmetic, the mark the preservative that add." Mmmm… Remains me clear that neither know what is the stability, neither the PAO (Period After Opening).

  • "Do your own protective solar! With SPF approximate of 30 (and so approximate…)." I'm sorry, but arrived to this point my heart stops ! Seriously? One of the most complex products to formulate and with a level of protection very high, near at hand of any one. They will know the risks of the solar rays? Demential!

  • "It adds Sharomix or Cosgard (as I deduce Geogard 221)." They are conscious that there is distinct types of Sharomix? But have faith! In case that they give with the same INCI, will have recognised them? But what say Montse! The challenge also is overrated.

  • "It treats the acne and the rosacea, by his effect anti-inflammatory." Calla! That it is not cosmetic home-made, are home-made medicines! Anyway, I think that neither they have very clear the difference between ones or others.

Arrived here, have to ask you. You are well? Himself? As we follow… All this is verídico. No I have invented it to me.

And sincerely, the of "how do not sell the cosmetic do not have to fulfil with the regulation" to me, does not cost me!

There is something that calls responsibility, and with these practices only show me that they do not have it.

So I will say it screaming if it does fault. This is not chemistry! In the formulation of a cosmetic there is a work behind, in which they participate distinct professional, proofs, studies, norms, regulations, etc. Everything to guarantee a level of security elevated.

Summarizing, with this fashion of the home-made cosmetic is reducing all this to mix some ingredients, without a minimum guarantee of security and without offering technical knowledges neither scientists. Only by the mere fact to convince to the people that it is better for his health (clear…), that does not contain chemical, neither toxic (am biting me the tongue) and that they are more sustainable (go me, can not more!)

Now, say me you. What think? It is a danger or not?
