First university degree of perfumery in Spain

The Beauty Cluster and IQS Executive Education presented what has become the first recognised postgraduate course with an official university degree linked to the world of perfumery last April. Both specified that the 'Postgraduate in Perfumes and Fragrances, Market and Applications' is pioneering for being the only programme that is taught in Spanish and is distinguished from other training courses for being the first of long duration and that will provide a 360-degree vision of the industry.

As the enrolment period is about to close, we can find out about some of the advantages offered to students and how this new course has been received in the words of Cristobal Bernal, Technical Director of Carinsa and Co-Director of the programme: "The perfumery industry is one of the most relevant industrial sectors capable of weathering the macroeconomic ups and downs and being, year after year, an exporting power with a high trade surplus. Despite this and the high concentration of companies in the sector in Catalonia and Spain, there are no regulated programmes that respond to the needs of the sector. This is the only reason why the Beauty Cluster decided to lead the change and, thanks to its business ecosystem, to think about training made by the industry and for the industry. For this reason, the programme has been designed to respond to the concerns of professionals and to make perfumery known as a sector to which they can dedicate themselves, making known the multidisciplinary nature that it entails. As it is an industry-based programme, renowned trainers have been selected to explain their experience first hand, which makes the Perfumery postgraduate course unique. In addition, the 360º scope that allows to know from the origin of the raw materials of perfumery, to the different industrial applications through concepts of Marketing, Regulatory and Innovation make this course a unique case".

Next in Beauty' has also been able to count on the testimony of Dr. Xavier Ortiz Almirall, who also co-directs together with Cristóbal Bernal, this new training: "For our centre, hosting the Postgraduate Programme in Perfumes and Fragrances means creating a synergy IQS - Beauty Cluster, which combines the teaching experience and laboratories equipped with the latest generation of IQS instrumentation with the specialised knowledge of the perfumery sector of the Beauty Cluster. IQS is thus positioned as a pioneering centre of reference in perfumery training in Spanish". On the other hand, Ortiz Almirall also wanted to highlight that the inclusion of the Postgraduate in Perfumery and Fragrances in the centre opens the doors of IQS to a highly specialised and competitive sector at a national level. "We hope that in the not too distant future we will be able to support the industry in improving production processes and better characterising formulations," said Dr. Xavier Ortiz Almirall.

As Cristóbal Bernal has previously specified, this course serves as a solution to the great and growing demand from professionals to have access to perfumery training also in Spanish. Until then, the most relevant studies and training courses that delve more deeply into the field of perfumery were taught in France, and therefore in French. For this reason, the postgraduate course is especially aimed at technical staff in perfumery companies or in the fragrance sector; professionals who want to train and deepen their knowledge in perfumery; recent graduates in university degrees or training cycles in chemistry, biochemistry or pharmacy; and also professionals in the areas of marketing, sales or purchasing managers in perfumery companies who want to deepen their knowledge in this field.
